This is the famous Puto Bumbong.  It is very popular among Filipinos during the 9 day straight novena masses before Christmas or locally known to Filipinos as Simbang Gabi.  Well I tried one but not during a Simbang Gabi but on a Puto Bumbong Store in front of the Farmer’s Market.  What is good about Puto Bumbong is that it is always given to you fresh from the bumbong or the bamboo tubes where it is being cooked.  Some folks love them some not but you Philippine Christmas Holidays will not be complete with a Puto Bumbong.

vivafilipinas said Puto Bumbong is made from soaked, ground glutinous rice called pirurutong, which has a distinctly purple hue. It is poured into bumbong or bamboo tubes, then steamed until cooked. It is topped with butter, fresh coconut shreds, & muscovado sugar (cane sugar) just before serving.  This dish, along with bibingka, is very popular among Filipinos during the nine day Simbang Gabi novena masses before Christmas.
